![]() The book opens with the narrator, Juan “Johnnnie” Rico describing a “drop” onto a “Skinny” planet (the Skinnies at this period were allied with the “Bugs” and later with the Terrans.) We’re introduced to the Mobile Infantry and their special powered and armored suits, equipped with all sorts of lethal weaponry that renders each infantryman more powerful than a tank. The setting is a war between the Terran Federation and the Pseudo-Arachnids (“Bugs”) set seven centuries in the future, at a time when travel at faster than light speeds is possible through Cherenkov Drive. ![]() ![]() I found myself wondering what this book is really about. ![]() Coming across a copy, I finally decided to fill that gap. Somehow, I missed this one, despite the fact that it won a 1960 Hugo Award. This fascinating, witty story of cosmic escapism examines a beautiful but unfamiliar physics landscape while sharing the excitement a leading astrophysicist feels when thinking about the universe and our place in it. Our universe could collapse in upon itself, or rip itself apart, or even - in the next five minutes - succumb to an inescapable expanding bubble of doom. Drawing on cutting edge technology and theory, as well as hot-off-the-presses results from the most powerful telescopes and particle colliders, astrophysicist Katie Mack describes how small tweaks to our incomplete understanding of reality can result in starkly different futures. ![]() The End of Everything is a unique exploration of the destruction of the cosmos. So too, our Sun will eventually shine its last. When will it take place? How is it likely to happen? How do scientists know? An acclaimed theoretical astrophysicist explores the end of the Universe. ![]() ![]() ![]() Melissa Clark " Dinner: Changing the Game". ![]() Lisa Faulkner "Recipes from my Mother for my Daughter".Julia Busattil Nishimura "A Year of Simple Family Food".John Whaite "John Whaite Bakes at Home".Jenny Rosenstrach "The Weekday Vegetarians".Jennifer Segal "Once Upon a Chef Weeknight Weekend".Jennifer Joyce "My Street Food Kitchen".Jeni Britton Bauer "Splendid Ice Creams at Home".Jamie Oliver The Return of the Naked Chef.Jamie Oliver "Superfood Family Classics".Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall "River Cottage Family Cookbook".Henry Dimbleby & John Vincent "Leon 2, Naturally Fast Food".Hemsley and Hemsley "The Art of Eating Well". ![]()

Kadir Nelson, one of this generation's most accomplished, award-winning artists, has created an epic yet intimate introduction to the history of America and African Americans, from colonial days through the civil rights movement. It's a story of discrimination and broken promises, determination and triumphs. This is the story of the men, women, and children who toiled in the hot sun picking cotton for their masters it's about the America ripped in two by Jim Crow laws it's about the brothers and sisters of all colors who rallied against those who would dare bar a child from an education. But it is also the story of injustice of a country divided by law, education, and wealth of a people whose struggles and achievements helped define their country. ![]() The story of America and African Americans is a story of hope and inspiration and unwavering courage. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She marries Al, and together they decide to breed their own herd of circus freaks by experimenting liberally with drugs, arsenic, and anything they can sniff whilst Lil is pregnant. So, where to begin.Ĭrystal Lil is part of a travelling circus, an original 'geek' from Boston who earns a living ripping the heads off live chickens with her teeth. The term 'geek', is explained in a preliminary disclaimer to be an older use of the word, referring to deformity or abnormality rather than what we think of today in relation to academics, nerds, etc. I read it as part of my local LGBTQ+ Book Club, and we're going to discuss it later this month. I would have mistaken it for a contemporary rom-com, when actually, it's the furthest possible thing from that. The cover didn't really grab me, the title did nothing for me either. This is not a book I would likely have picked up. ![]() I have never read anything so original, so disturbing, so utterly bizarre as Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. The moment I finished this book, I had to run to the blog to get my thoughts out. ![]() ![]() ![]() Megan has decided that she doesn’t want or need a man – she has never fallen in love with one and doesn’t think she is capable of it – instead, she intends to fulfil her desire for motherhood by a visit to the local sperm bank.Ĭonnor Reed is surprised – in a good way – when the gorgeous woman he’d noticed earlier as he’d walked by her table approaches him and asks him if he’ll walk her out of the bar. Megan Scott is in Vegas with a group of (very bitchy) girlfriends, and they’re out partying before being bridesmaids at the wedding of one of their number the next day. I went into this one hoping for more of the same and found it, for the most part, but the story as a whole is rather let down by the hero who spends most of the novel trying to persuade the heroine into doing something she isn’t sure she wants to do. I’ve read a couple of the author’s more recent titles and enjoyed them – funny, sexy and sweet, they’re written with a secure but deft hand and boast attractive principals and a strong supporting cast. ![]() ![]() Mira Lyn Kelly’s Waking Up Married is one of the titles in Harlequin’s short-lived Kiss line (which is published as Mills & Boon Modern Tempted in the UK). ![]() ![]() ![]() "Indeed." Reverend Somerton's smile managed to convey both understanding and a shared grief.Ī churchman's trick, Marcus supposed, but a good one. "I hope my marriage will be a source of strength for her." "The dowager's health is somewhat worse," he informed the reverend stiffly. ![]() More particularly, he couldn't bear any delay.īut the Earl of Spenford always behaved in a manner befitting his position. He couldn't bear to discuss his mother's fragile condition, even with her parson. He turned his neck slightly within the starched collar of his shirt, seeking relief from the constriction. Whether it was the room, or the awkward nature of his mission, he felt hemmed in. The reverend's study was a fine enough room, but smaller than Marcus was used to. Marcus spread his fingers on the arms of the rosewood chair and forced himself to appear at ease. ![]() "I gathered as much from the message you sent." Reverend Adrian Somerton removed his spectacles. Every father in England would be honored to hear those words from him. Marcus Brookstone, Earl of Spenford, was certain his position and wealth more than compensated for the urgent, somewhat irregular nature of the request. ![]() |
